Brixham is a picturesque fishing town in Devon.
The town is hilly and is built around the harbour, with its landmark breakwater sheltering the port. In a typical year Brixham lands more fish than any other English port - in 2012 some £27m by value.
King William III of Great Britain & Ireland, landed in Brixham, with his mainly Dutch army, on 5 November 1688 and issued his famous declaration "The Liberties of England and the Protestant Religion I Will Maintain". Many local people still have Dutch surnames, being direct descendants of that army.
The tower of All Saints' Church, founded in 1815, stands proudly overlooking the town. The composer of Abide With Me, Rev. Francis Lyte was a vicar at the church. He lived in what is now the Berry Head Hotel, and when he was a very sick man, near to dying, he looked out from his garden as dusk fell over Torbay, and the words of that hymn came into his mind.
Brixham - is easily accessible from the M5 motorway. Plus it is also a fantastic gateway to the remainder of the South West and the whole of Cornwall. Mid-way between Exeter and Plymouth it's on the sheltered south Devon coast.
